The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, firmly addressed the United States ambassador in Mexico, Ronald Johnson, with a clear warning that echoed from the National Palace: foreign diplomats must respect the internal affairs of the country.

During the morning press conference «La Mañanera del Pueblo», Sheinbaum demanded that the American representative show respect for Mexican sovereignty, emphasizing that his role should be limited to bilateral issues and cooperation.

The President’s stern response came after Johnson published a message on social media urging both countries to not turn the fight against drug cartels into a political dispute. The diplomat, a retired intelligence officer, cautioned that any time spent in confrontation is a lost opportunity to strengthen security collaboration.

Sheinbaum described these statements as a disrespectful intervention that undermines fundamental principles of international law and demanded he “respect the internal matters of the country.”

The presidential reply was well-prepared. On Sunday, May 31, from the Monument to the Mexican Revolution, Sheinbaum had already issued a pointed warning: she will not allow U.S. Department of Justice offices to dictate the electoral process in Mexico, as reported by TeleSUR.

This statement came in the context of U.S. judicial requests against the suspended governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha, and nine other former officials accused of alleged drug trafficking crimes. For Sheinbaum, these actions go beyond judicial cooperation and encroach on areas that are strictly internal choices for Mexicans.

Sheinbaum justified her stance based on two irrefutable constitutional pillars: the autodetermination of peoples and non-intervention. She emphasized that no Mexican ambassador, whether in Washington, Canberra, or any other capital, interferes in the internal political issues of the host countries where they are assigned. The reason? Respect for the sovereignty of others is a principle that Mexico both practices and demands.

Thus, the President asserted that Johnson must adhere to collaboration and institutional coordination, refraining from judgments on Mexican political life.

«It is crucial for ambassadors to stay focused on collaboration; they must be respectful of the internal affairs of the countries,» she pointed out.

Sheinbaum acknowledged, however, a shared view with the American diplomat: the necessity of working together against the violence fostered by organized crime. Yet, she clarified that such efforts must operate under clear rules: U.S. security forces act on their territory and Mexican forces on theirs. «We seek collaboration and coordination to move forward together,» she emphasized, as reported by La Jornada.

In a closing message to the citizens, Sheinbaum reiterated her call for participation in informational assemblies focused on transforming the country and defending national independence. «We want a good relationship with the United States, but with respect for sovereignty,» she stressed. The warning was clear: Mexico will not allow its fate to be decided beyond its borders.
