In a public statement, the organization Vía Campesina condemned the massacre that occurred on Thursday, May 21, in the Rigores community of Colón, Honduras, describing it as a tragedy that shakes the entire nation and highlights the vulnerability and lack of security faced by rural communities.
«Young lives were taken, sons and daughters of members of the agricultural companies within the Rigores Farmers’ Movement. So far, 17 men and three women have been cowardly murdered,» the statement reads, emphasizing that «violence cannot continue, nor can impunity remain in this country.»
The organization demanded a thorough, independent, and impartial investigation by the Honduran government, with public results and accountability to society, as well as the immediate arrest and trial of those materially and intellectually responsible for the massacre.
Vía Campesina insists that this must be paired with «guarantees of safety for the victims’ families and the entire Rigores community, along with effective institutional presence in territories affected by agrarian conflicts—not only when bodies are already on the ground.»
Furthermore, they called for a halt to legislation that criminalizes the defense of peasant and indigenous territories and for a public acknowledgment of the relationship between land concentration in agribusiness hands and the violence faced by Honduras’ rural communities.
«The fight for land is legitimate. Defending life is not a crime. As long as agribusiness continues to hold more value than peasant livelihoods, we will remain standing, organized and united,» concludes the Vía Campesina Honduras statement.
In response to the news, the Honduran government announced an immediate and large-scale military intervention in the area where the events took place.
“This is another wound that Honduras does not deserve. This will not be forgotten and will not go unpunished.”
