Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez made headlines on Wednesday, March 18, by demanding a rifle to protect his country from a potential attack by the United States.

«I demand my AKM, if they come. And I state this very seriously,» the 79-year-old artist wrote on his blog Segunda Cita, commenting on an article by Josué Veloz Cerrade titled «Cuba at the Crossroads of Hypocritical Multilateralism,» which discusses recent threats from Trump against the island.

It is noteworthy that the U.S. president claimed this week that he believed he would have «the honor» of taking Cuba: «All my life I have been hearing about Cuba and the United States. When would the United States do it? I believe I will have the honor of taking Cuba. Whether to liberate it or take it. I think I will be able to do whatever I want with it, to tell the truth. They are a very weakened nation at this moment,» were Trump’s exact words.

In response, Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel asserted that «any external aggressor will face an impenetrable resistance» on the island.

«They aim to announce plans to seize the country, its resources, properties, and even the economy they seek to suffocate to bring us to submission. This explains the fierce economic war that is applied as collective punishment against the entire people. In the face of the worst scenario, Cuba possesses one certainty: any external aggressor will encounter impenetrable resistance,» Díaz-Canel stated, remarks that Rodríguez also shared on his blog.

What is an AKM?

The AKM is a Soviet assault rifle designed to be a «more modernized and lightweight» version of the famous AK-47, weighing approximately one kilogram less.

Adopted in 1959, the weapon introduced stamped metal parts for easier mass production, making it the most widely produced rifle in the Kalashnikov series.

Following Rodríguez’s publication, social media has been flooded with expressions of support and admiration for his stance, with numerous interviews and quotes where the prominent singer-songwriter expresses his unwavering support for the Revolution being shared almost instantly.
