As part of the new Ciclo Ópera Prima series, organized by Centro Arte Alameda and the Chilean Association of Directors and Screenwriters (ADG), the film ‘Saturday’ (2003), directed by Matías Bize, will be screened on Saturday, August 22 at 7 PM, with Bize himself presenting the feature.
‘Saturday’ is recognized as one of the foundational films of the so-called New Chilean Cinema. The film made a significant mark in the national cinematic landscape with its unique formal and narrative approach: it was shot in MiniDV and filmed entirely in a single take, following in real-time a situation characterized by tension, intimacy, and uncertainty.
Conceived practically without a budget, ‘Saturday’ is a significant film for a new generation of filmmakers and viewers, marking the beginning of Matías Bize’s noteworthy career.
The cast includes Blanca Lewin, Antonia Zegers, Sebastián Layseca, and Diego Muñoz, who at that time were just beginning to solidify their careers and brought a particularly recognizable generational energy to the film.
The screenplay was co-written by Matías Bize, Paula del Fierro, and Julio Rojas, while the remarkable work of Gabriel Díaz on cinematography was essential in shaping the film’s visual experience.
