Social Organizations Urge Mobilization Ahead of Kast’s First Public Account

Around 20 organizations have issued a unified call to mobilize in the context of José Antonio Kast’s first Public Account and to oppose the mega-reform promoted by the executive branch.

The invitation follows a series of assemblies where the organizations assessed the current political landscape and agreed to push forward mobilization efforts against austerity policies.

The main event is scheduled for June 1 at 6:00 PM in Plaza Baquedano, under the slogan “Stop the Wealthy Mega-Reform.”

On that day, the first Public Account since Kast took office will take place, with his speech expected to commence at 12:00 PM at the National Congress in Valparaíso.

Organizations joining the call include the Coordinadora Feminista 8M, Modatima, ACES, CONFECh, Memorarte, the Commission Against Torture, MST, among others.

Fernanda Cavada, spokesperson for the Coordinadora Feminista 8M, criticized the series of cuts pushed by the government, denouncing that these policies “especially impact children and working women.”

“We are taking to the streets to stop Kast’s policies of misery and to expose the deception faced by those who placed their trust in him. In just two and a half months of his administration, the far-right has only lied, cut, and dismantled social rights,” she added.

According to Cristóbal Rodríguez, National Spokesperson for Modatima, “the call for national mobilization is a concrete demonstration that the fiscal cuts proposed by Kast’s government affect millions of Chileans across the board, even impacting voters from his own sector who recognize these measures as an unavoidable setback.”

Juana Aguilera from the Ethical Commission Against Torture (CECT) urged people to join the demonstration and mobilize “against the violence of an indifferent government, against the violence that has seeped into our homes, against the violence aimed at migrant men, women, and children, and against the violence with which it is attacking workers.”
