Teachers Urge Government to Acknowledge Widespread Rejection of Minister Quiroz Following Latest CEP Survey
In light of the results from the latest CEP survey, the Chilean Teachers’ Association highlighted that education ranks among the top three priorities for citizens, alongside health and safety.
National union president Mario Aguilar emphasized that the survey results are unsurprising, noting that «the Chilean education system still faces numerous shortcomings.»
«Moreover, it is crucial to point out that a significant majority of people disagree with how the government is addressing the fiscal deficit. Cuts to social sectors such as health and education are having a noticeable impact,» Aguilar stated.
«On one hand, people prioritize resolving issues in health and education; on the other, the cuts directly affect these two areas. It is clear that the majority disapprove of the government’s handling of fiscal adjustments,» Aguilar argued.
The teachers’ representative warned that the high disapproval ratings for the government are a clear indicator of public sentiment: «More than half of the population disapproves of the way budget cuts are being implemented. We have stated that education should not face cuts; it should not lose funding—on the contrary, it needs more resources as the issues show.»
Lastly, Aguilar addressed the significant disapproval directed at Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz: «The public’s negative evaluation of Quiroz, who has stubbornly pursued these widely rejected policies, signals that the government must take these findings seriously, analyze the survey, and recognize that its policies are largely being rejected by the populace.»
«This is something they must listen to,» the union leader emphasized.
