OS-9 Police Personnel raided the National Congress offices to carry out a document seizure order from the office of Senator Camila Flores of the Renovación Nacional (RN) party, who is currently under investigation for the potential crime of public funds fraud in the infamous «Cuota Flores«.
This operation was made possible by a judicial authorization from the Valparaíso Guarantee Court, coordinated by prosecutor Paola Castiglione, who is leading the inquiry.
It is worth noting that on April 8, Channel 13’s investigative team publicized an anonymous complaint against Camila Flores, which prompted the Public Ministry’s investigation, and was also being investigated concurrently by El Ciudadano.
The report revealed alleged arranged salaries and agreements involving public funds, with potential payments to employees described as «elastic,» whose funds would later return to the then-congresswoman for personal expenses, a practice referred to as «Cuota Flores.»
Specifically, the right-wing legislator is accused of having improperly appropriated public funds after requesting that part of her staff’s salaries be given to her in cash to finance personal expenses. This situation allegedly persisted for at least seven years, with an amount nearing $300 million.
«To achieve this, she made a series of personnel hires, where, for example: Mr. X was hired for $2,640,939, of which $1,800,000 was to be handed over in cash to the congresswoman for personal use,» with funds that would be also collected by one of her staff members, who even «pressures others with WhatsApp messages as the collection date approaches,» according to the complaint received by El Ciudadano.
According to reports from T13, the raid took place this Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., following two requests for intrusive measures in the case. The first request was denied in March, but after new evidence was presented, the Court approved the request to access the senator’s tax and financial information, as well as that of other accused parties, including the senator’s secretary, Yolanda Olfos, identified as the alleged collector of the «Cuota Flores», among the collaborators hired by Flores with Congressional funds.
During the operation, computers, electronic devices, folders with accounting documents, and key digital evidence for the case were seized.
Simultaneously, Paola Castiglione, the high-complexity prosecutor in Valparaíso, reportedly visited the Senate premises to interrogate the senator, as reported by Cooperativa.
