The Family Abyss: Examining the Maternal Role through Fragmented Memories on Stage

Some intimate structures function like an invisible minefield. Based on this premise, CORNISA, the latest original production, will grace the stage at the Theater del Puente from August 8 to 23. Rather than following a linear narrative, the story dissects time, revealing the before and after of a violent break that shakes the foundations of four women.

The direction is helmed by Avril Aurora, who conceived the staging driven by a persistent question about family undercurrents. According to the playwright, exploring motherhood in today’s era serves as an essential political and social mirror to decipher our roots.

Between Filial Mourning and the Comedy of Estrangement

The backbone of the play is Manuela, constructed as a puzzle from intersecting perspectives, post-bellum calls, clandestine quotes, and everyday snapshots that straddle tenderness and resentment. The delicate balance of these relationships inspired the central concept of the production.

“We understood the cornice as that place where balance is unstable and where two truths coexist simultaneously: the desire to fully understand those we love and the certainty that this will never be possible,” reflects Aurora on the symbolic weight of the title.

To navigate the density of pain and mourning, the production employs absurdity, satire, and sharp black humor. This approach aims to dynamite traditional solemnity through incisive and candid dialogues, inviting audiences to fill in with their imagination what the script deliberately leaves unspoken.
