The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technology on a global scale cannot be overlooked. This progress has sparked heightened scrutiny regarding its implications for human life, echoing historical responses to major scientific and technological breakthroughs.

This theme resonated during the recent 9th World AI Conference held in Shanghai, particularly highlighted by the keynote speech from Chinese President Xi Jinping on July 17. The four-day event attracted 1,117 exhibitors, showcased more than 4,400 pieces, and received over 400,000 visitors, with representatives from 102 countries and international organizations.

The significance of the opening address stemmed not only from China’s role as the host but also from its current standing at the forefront of technology, especially in AI, and its leadership role in shaping a more equitable multipolar world.

President Xi’s speech centered around three key themes:

1.- Technology Inequality

President Xi warned against a «new historical injustice» in artificial intelligence, urging that the upcoming technological revolution must not replicate past inequalities.

This injustice would arise if developing nations continued to provide data, resources, and labor, while wealth, influence, and rewards generated by AI remained concentrated elsewhere—a gap that already appears to be emerging.

“We must engage in broad international cooperation and assist Global South countries in enhancing their capabilities to bridge digital and AI divides, promote sustainable development, and prevent the emergence of new historical injustices in this realm,” President Xi declared.

The Chinese leader consistently positioned China as the main advocate for the Global South in the struggle against the digital divide and as the country ensuring that its neighbors will benefit from Beijing’s development.
