The Latest Edition of El Ciudadano Is Out: Analyzing Pinochet’s Restoration

In our Issue No. 270, we conduct an in-depth analysis of what we define as the restoration of Pinochet’s pillars under José Antonio Kast’s government: political authoritarianism, economic neoliberalism, and moral conservatism. This covers everything from tax reforms and social cuts to the assault on labor rights, the criminalization of migration, and the advancement of a conservative agenda.

We also kick off with our EDITORIAL titled: «Defending National Sovereignty»—a reflection on Chile’s relationship with the United States, new tariffs, global geopolitical disputes, and the necessity for our country to diversify its alliances and uphold a sovereign foreign policy, free from any power’s subordination.

One of the key investigations in this edition tracks the influence of Peter Thiel in Chile. We reconstruct the networks connecting the billionaire and Palantir owner with political sectors in the country, examining the intersections between mining, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, surveillance, technology, and the strategic interests of the United States in the Southern Cone.

In Justice, we explore a new angle of the Hermosilla Case: the court has denied modifications to the preventive detention of former prosecutor Manuel Guerra, while the Public Prosecutor’s Office acknowledged an agreement to potentially conclude the case through an abbreviated process. Complainants warn that an early closure could jeopardize the investigation into the corruption network and its ties to Luis Hermosilla and Andrés Chadwick.

We also interview Daniel Muñoz about «Mil Pedazos», exploring themes of grief, marginalization, and the «fractured» individuals that society often overlooks. In this conversation, the actor emphasizes the social power of art: «Cinema shapes politics, society, and humanity.»

In our film section, Ernesto Garratt analyzes Christopher Nolan’s «Oppenheimer», delving into the obsessions that permeate the director’s body of work: time, memory, trauma, and characters caught between the past, present, and future.

In science, Bruno Sommer invites us to discover why, despite seeming stationary, we travel through the universe at over 1.3 million kilometers per hour, accounting for the movements of the Earth and the Solar System.

We also focus on Eärendil-1, the controversial Reflect Orbital project designed to install mirrors in orbit to reflect sunlight onto Earth at night. Is this energy innovation or a privatization of the night sky? Scientists and environmental organizations caution about its potential impacts on astronomy and ecosystems.

In El Ciudadano Patiperro, we travel to Guatemala to look beyond traditional tourist circuits. «The Trucks of Guatemala: Culture in Motion» offers an anthropological perspective on the vintage Blue Bird buses, transformed by communities into mobile works of art that transport people, goods, identities, memory, and popular culture.

Along with El Ciudadano No. 270, we are launching a new edition of our literary supplement La Lengua, dedicated to creation, literature, and culture. Among its content, we profile Roser Fort, director of the Centro Arte Alameda, who reflects on her 33 years devoted to culture and independent cinema, alongside new voices, stories, illustrations, and literary insights.
