Original article: “Agente topo”: Renuncia jefe de Contrainteligencia de Kast tras escándalo por vínculo con Hermosilla
Paulo Contreras has stepped down as the head of the Counterintelligence Division of the National Intelligence Agency (ANI), a decision confirmed by El Mostrador this Friday, citing a source from the Ministry of the Interior.
His resignation comes just hours after Reportea published an investigation revealing communications in which Contreras, while holding high-ranking positions in the Investigative Police (PDI), provided sensitive information to lawyer Luis Hermosilla.
According to Reportea’s findings, Contreras shared confidential information with Hermosilla through messages, in-person meetings, and conversations via Telegram, supported by a detailed report exceeding 470 pages. Among the incidents mentioned were the sharing of immigration data regarding the then-mayor of Recoleta, Daniel Jadue; details about Carabinero generals Mario Rozas and Marcelo Araya during their promotions; and coordination efforts to address a report involving the then-director general of the PDI, Héctor Espinosa, who was defended by Hermosilla.
Prior to the resignation announcement, Senator Daniella Cicardini and Congressman Daniel Manouchehri (PS) filed a complaint with the National Prosecution Office seeking an investigation into the disclosed information, alleging possible crimes of breach of secrecy, bribery, and corruption.
Congressman Manouchehri emphasized to El Mostrador: «This individual was appointed in March by Kast’s government to lead Chile’s counterintelligence. That is why we filed this complaint and demand his immediate removal: he cannot remain in this position another day while this is unresolved.»
«The government must answer a very simple question: did they know or not? If they didn’t know, it’s a serious negligence in the most sensitive position in the state. And if they did know, it’s much worse. First Zaliasnik as ambassador, now this. How many more from the Hermosilla network are working in the government?» the legislator added, referring to the Audio Case. The parliamentarians also announced they would reach out to the ANI and the Ministry of Security to ascertain what information was considered during Contreras’s appointment and the verification processes involved.
