An official lost her life after being attacked by a student armed with sharp objects and incendiary materials.

On the morning of Friday, March 27, a premeditated attack unfolded when an 18-year-old student assaulted teachers and fellow students at the Instituto Obispo Silva Lezaeta. The tragic incident resulted in the death of inspector M.V.R. and left another staff member and three students under 15 injured and requiring medical attention in the city.

The aggressor, who was in his senior year, was apprehended by Carabineros after being restrained at the school while carrying knives and gasoline during the assault. Preliminary reports suggest that the tragedy was sparked when the inspectors tried to intervene in a dispute among students, though it is also possible that the attack on the deceased inspector was a targeted act.

Hours before the incident, the responsible student posted photos on his social media while masked and holding a knife, accompanied by the caption «to whom it may concern,» and even shared content moments after the inspector’s murder. He is currently in custody.

In light of the severity of the event, Mario Aguilar, president of the Teachers’ Association, expressed his deep shock, describing the event as «dramatic, terrible, and horrifying.» The leader emphasized that it is unacceptable for an education professional to lose their life while performing their teaching duties, extending condolences to the family and the educational community of Calama.

Aguilar also launched a strong critique of state management, reminding that the association has been warning about the rising violence in classrooms for a long time without receiving concrete responses. «We said more than once that a dramatic and terrible event would eventually occur,» he added, stressing that violence is escalating and has not been taken seriously enough.

In his remarks, the union president pointed out the lack of legal tools and effective mental health programs, mentioning the Coexistence Law, which has yet to be published in the Official Gazette. Aguilar believes this issue poses the gravest challenge facing the Chilean school system and requires the new authorities under José Kast’s government to act urgently to provide solutions that are currently lacking.

The criticism also extended to society at large, calling for a rejection of normalizing violence in educational spaces. «Families must send their children to schools with the assurance that they will be safe,» adding that this situation should serve as a wake-up call, marking «a before and after following this event.»

Finally, the Teachers’ Association expressed its willingness to collaborate on a National School Coexistence Plan to address this security crisis. Meanwhile, classes in Calama have been suspended, and the PDI Homicide Brigade continues the necessary investigations to clarify the motives behind this murder that casts a shadow over Chilean education.
