Prosecutor Milton Torres confirmed news that began circulating on Friday, June 26, regarding the theft of more than $37,000 from the police substation in Colchane, located in the northern part of the country.
«The Local Prosecutor’s Office of Tamarugal received a report of a theft that occurred inside the Carabineros police unit in Colchane. The stolen amount exceeds $37,000 and more than 800 bolivianos, which were seized as part of a smuggling operation involving currency,» the prosecutor stated, as reported by various media outlets.
Following the report, Prosecutor Torres explained that the Public Ministry has «decreed all necessary measures, with specialized personnel from the Internal Affairs of Carabineros, to quickly clarify the whereabouts of those responsible for the crime.»
Meanwhile, other reports detailed that the money was secured in a safe within the substation and had been confiscated after an investigation of a Bolivian woman who was arrested for currency smuggling while entering Chile through the Colchane Border Complex.
The story is still developing.
