On Thursday, April 9, UNICEF reported that recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon resulted in the tragic deaths of 33 children and left another 153 injured within just one day.

In a press release, the international organization detailed that «yesterday (April 8), within minutes, as news of a regional ceasefire agreement briefly sparked hope throughout the country, deadly Israeli airstrikes struck across Lebanon, killing 33 children and injuring 153.»

“Children and families faced a wave of bombings that devastated entire communities, resulting in horrifying consequences. This latest loss of life adds to the staggering total of over 600 children killed or injured in Lebanon since March 2,” the UNICEF report stated.

The organization further indicated that they continue to receive reports of children rescued from the rubble while others remain missing and separated from their families.

“Many are experiencing trauma after losing their loved ones, homes, and sense of safety,” UNICEF noted, adding that nationwide, more than one million people have been displaced, including approximately 390,000 children, “many for the second, third, or even fourth time.”

Violation of International Law

UNICEF reminded the world that «international humanitarian law is clear: civilians, including children, must be protected at all times.»

«All parties involved in the conflict must take all possible precautions to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and ensure safe, sustained, and unimpeded humanitarian access. The use of explosive weapons with wide-ranging effects in densely populated areas poses a deadly threat to children and must cease,” the statement emphasized.

It is important to note that UNICEF is present in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, providing care for injured children through the Assistance and Care for War-Injured and Affected Children (ACWA) program.

“In light of increased needs, UNICEF is expanding its emergency response. Our teams are assisting in distributing essential supplies in shelters, providing medical materials to public health centers, and mobile units are offering urgent care to displaced families,” the organization explained.
