The United Nations celebrated Chinese Language Day in New York ahead of its official commemoration on April 20. Experts highlighted the growing number of Chinese language students and the increasingly positive perception of China among younger generations.
Chinese was established as one of the official languages of the United Nations in 1946. Over 80 years later, it is celebrated at the UN headquarters in New York under the theme «Chinese Language Illuminates Civilizations.» During the event, diplomats and representatives emphasized the growing interest of young people in learning Chinese, as well as the expansion of its global influence.
The United Nations notes that language days aim to promote multilingualism and highlight the six official languages of the organization, including Chinese.
Speakers underscored the increasing role of the Chinese language in diplomacy, international relations, and business. They also pointed out that more and more young people are choosing to learn Chinese as their first foreign language.
The event also featured a video contest on Chinese culture organized by the Chinese mission to the UN, as well as musical performances for attendees.
Chinese Language Day will officially be celebrated on April 20 with a series of activities, including a showcase of the UN’s Chinese translation service and a forum on how this language can enhance youth participation in international affairs.
