The University of Austral in Chile deeply mourned the passing of Paul Landon Pugh at the age of 73. He was a journalist, documentarian, and the creator of the iconic TV show «Tierra Adentro.»

According to the university, Landon’s work «left an indelible mark on Chilean television and on the promotion of the country’s cultural heritage and rural world.»

«He passed away at 73, leaving a significant legacy in the promotion, appreciation, and recovery of heritage, traditions, and the development of rural territories in Chile,» highlighted the UACh.

In this regard, they noted that in addition to his recognized career in the media, he maintained a close relationship with the University of Austral.

«After studying Journalism at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, he completed the Master’s in Rural Development at UACh, becoming the first graduate of this pioneering program. Later, he served as Extension Director during Carlos Amtmann’s rectorship, advancing initiatives aimed at strengthening the bond between the University and the community,» the institution stated.

Furthermore, in recognition of his outstanding career and contributions to national culture and heritage, the University awarded him the Luis Oyarzún Prize in 2015, an honor given to those who have «notably» contributed to solving human, societal, and environmental issues.

The Rector of UACh, Dr. Egon Montecinos, emphasized Landon’s legacy and commitment: «Our institution has significantly benefited from the contributions of individuals like him across various fields. Paul Landon enriched us with his commitment to UACh; his presence, management, and intense work in extension, communications, and continuing education have made our university stronger.»

«We hope to hold an event in these areas in the coming months to honor his legacy. Our community mourns his passing today but also wishes to be part of a tribute to the action and commitment he represented,» added Rector Montecinos.

For former UACh rector Professor Carlos Amtmann, a friend of Paul Landon who worked with him at the Center for Continuing Education, his passing represents a significant loss, yet he also leaves an invaluable legacy.

«Paul was distinguished by his continuous research efforts in the fields of social and cultural sciences, as well as by his original and relevant contributions, reflected in numerous documents and publications. His ability to create dialogue and analysis spaces, especially regarding agriculture and water management, allowed knowledge sharing with men and women from the farming sector, significantly contributing to the development of these territories,» Amtmann noted.

«At the University of Austral, he was a reference in training for agricultural research methodology, being one of the pioneers in promoting this area of study and projection. His commitment to community engagement was reflected in numerous significant initiatives and activities for the university community. His achievements, work, and vision transcend his passing. They will remain in the memory of those who had the opportunity to know him, learn from him, and share his commitment to knowledge and societal development,» emphasized the former rector.

Paul Landon on «Tierra Adentro,» a classic of Chilean television, aired from 1991 to 2004 on TVN; between 2004 and 2009 on Canal 13; and from 2009 to 2015 on Mega.

More About His Career

His perspective on rural areas transcended television. Through his academic background and professional work, Paul Landon promoted a comprehensive understanding of territory, valuing both cultural heritage and the developmental processes experienced by rural communities.

His interdisciplinary training was key to developing an innovative communication proposal. In this context, the program Tierra Adentro became a reference in Latin American television for its socio-anthropological, cultural, and environmental approach to the various expressions of Chilean rurality. For over two decades, it was broadcast on national TV channels: from 1991 to 2004 on TVN, from 2004 to 2009 on Canal 13, and from 2009 to 2015 on Mega.

Paul Landon’s legacy was widely recognized by public institutions and organizations linked to heritage and sustainable development. Throughout his career, he received TV Grama awards, distinctions from the Association of Entertainment Journalists (APES), and accolades from agencies such as Conaf and Corfo for his contributions to promoting national identity, conserving natural heritage, and enhancing the value of the Chilean rural world.
