The US government, led by Donald Trump, has implemented a 12.5% tariff on Chile as part of an investigation conducted under Section 301 concerning the importation of goods produced with forced labor.
This news was announced on Thursday, July 23, prompting an immediate response from the Chilean government. Through the Undersecretariat for International Economic Relations, they stated that the US decision «does not constitute a measure directed specifically against Chile.»
«This is adopted within the framework of an investigation conducted according to US domestic law, and not as a result of a bilateral negotiation between both countries. Furthermore, this investigation had a global scope and included more than 60 economies, accounting for 99.4% of US imports, among them major trading partners such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Mexico, and Peru, among others,» emphasizes the Subrei communiqué.
The national body also pointed out that the resolution «does not state that Chile exports goods produced with forced labor nor does it identify specific Chilean products under such conditions. The decision stems from differences in the evaluation of the regulatory mechanisms recognized as effective by US authorities.»
«Chile has a strong labor institutional framework, a robust regulatory framework, and a firm commitment to the prevention and eradication of forced labor, supported by compliance with international agreements signed by the country in this area. In this context, the Government of Chile considers that the application of this measure to our country does not align with these standards, nor with the technical, political, and legal backgrounds presented throughout the investigation process,» adds the note from the Undersecretariat.
