For the first time in its recent history, Venezuela has appointed a representative from the democratic opposition as the head of a diplomatic delegation abroad.

The interim president of the Caribbean nation, Delcy Rodríguez, proposed opposition deputy Timoteo Zambrano as the new extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, and the National Assembly unanimously approved the designation after the Foreign Policy Commission evaluated his credentials.

The decision has been interpreted within the political landscape as a sign of democratic plurality, reflective of the new political phase that the South American country is experiencing.

«It has been a long time since an opposition representative has been included in government roles. This could be the start of a reconfiguration towards greater plural participation in the Executive,» stated opposition deputy Luis Augusto Romero from the Avanzada Progresista (AP) party, who advocated for Zambrano’s nomination.

Romero emphasized that citizens demand unity beyond any political differences. «The country wants change, but peacefully,» he declared to extranewsmundo.

Legislator Antonio Ecarri, leader of the Alianza del Lápiz party, described the decision as a «great first step» toward broader political openness.

From the Chavista side, deputy Gilberto Giménez Prieto supported the designation, highlighting that «the highest interests of the country surpass any party affiliation.«

«Right now, national unity is necessary around the foremost interests of the country (…) I believe this is a concrete example,» he stated to the aforementioned media.

Deputy Ileana Medina from the PPT party argued that «politics is not violence» and that Zambrano understands this perfectly, believing he will be a «worthy representative» of Venezuela, as reported by extranewsmundo.

Who is Timoteo Zambrano?

The politician has a long history with the political parties that make up the opposition to the Bolivarian Revolution; he has been affiliated with Acción Democrática and Un Nuevo Tiempo, the party of former presidential candidate Manuel Rosales. He currently leads Cambiemos Movimiento Ciudadano.

His journey through various parties reflects the internal crises of the Venezuelan opposition, marked by ruptures and reconfigurations. Zambrano participated in the first major dialogue table with the government of the late former president Hugo Chávez and was a spokesperson for the now-defunct Coordinadora Democrática, as well as a member of the Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD).

Over time, he distanced himself from the extremist opposition pushing for blockades, sanctions, and military invasions. His defense of dialogue and rejection of violence has positioned him in the moderate sector, earning criticism from the far right for this stance.

The appointment, which still requires the approval of the Spanish Government, would replace Gladys Gutiérrez as head of the embassy in Madrid.

The administration’s decision by Delcy Rodríguez to propose Zambrano as a diplomatic representative coincides with the demand for the definitive cessation of unilateral coercive measures imposed by the European Union against the South American nation.
