Original article: Venezuela condena racismo y violencia política contra Delcy Rodríguez tras dichos de Carlos Baute en acto de Machado en Madrid
The Venezuelan Embassy in Spain has issued a strong statement condemning racism and political violence directed at the nation’s appointed president, Delcy Rodríguez, following recent comments made by singer Carlos Baute at a public event in Madrid.
During the gathering at Puerta del Sol, an artistic presentation took place prior to the appearance of extreme-right Venezuelan opposition figure, María Corina Machado, during which Baute incited slogans against Rodríguez.
In its statement, the diplomatic mission, led by Ambassador Gladys Gutiérrez Alvarado, remarked that the expressions aimed at Rodríguez by the Venezuelan artist, who has been residing in Spain for decades, “represent a form of political violence rooted in misogyny and racism that cannot be justified under any circumstances.”
The Embassy emphasized that Venezuela is a profoundly mestizo nation forged from diverse indigenous, African, and European roots, and that this condition «not only defines our identity but also serves as one of the ethical pillars of our coexistence as a people.»
Therefore, any «attempt to degrade, dehumanize, or stigmatize based on that diversity represents a direct attack on the very essence of what it means to be Venezuelan.»
From the diplomatic headquarters, they stated that “calling a woman ‘monkey’ constitutes an act of dehumanization incompatible with the principles of international law regarding human rights and the minimum standards of democratic coexistence.”
“Venezuela categorically denounces these incidents and reaffirms that its women, as historical and political figures, must not and will not be subject to hate speech, regardless of its source,” they asserted.
“Furthermore, we firmly denounce any form of utilizing public spaces for the dissemination of messages of hate, exclusion, or symbolic violence,” they emphasized.
In the statement, the institution highlighted that expressions like those made by Carlos Baute in Madrid evoke historical practices of dehumanization and racism that are not only «morally objectionable» but also «politically regressive and deeply contrary to the values» that Venezuela upholds as a nation.
“The ideals of our Liberator, Simón Bolívar, rise against all forms of domination, exclusion, and contempt among human beings,” they reminded.
The Embassy also offered apologies for the singer’s remarks to the Spanish people, who are well aware of the horrors of fascism and hate crimes, as well as to anyone who may have felt offended.
“Such words do not represent the Venezuelan people or their culture, which is characterized by respect, solidarity, and human dignity,” they underlined.
Finally, they reaffirmed their rejection of any form of hate speech dissemination and their commitment to “the defense of universal values of equality, respect, and justice, as well as the promotion of “coexistence based on recognizing diversity as wealth, not as a cause for discrimination.”
