A surge of attacks on social media, political statements, and digital publications has thrust Egon Montecinos, the rector of Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh), into the center of controversy. Following student protests during the visit of Minister of Science Ximena Lincolao, public attention has swiftly shifted from the violent incidents involving a minority group to an orchestrated communication offensive demanding the rector’s resignation and holding him directly accountable for the events while seeking to misinform the public.

According to information from within the university community, the violent incidents were instigated by a small number of protesters “counted on one hand,” contrasting with narratives that have emerged in certain political and media sectors, suggesting that what occurred was a premeditated “attack on the minister” orchestrated by a “Marxist.”

Accounts Driving the Attacks

Analysis of the circulated material reveals specific accounts that amplified the most aggressive messages against Rector Montecinos, combining misinformation, insults, and ideological slogans.

One of these accounts is APRA Chile Araucanía (Facebook) https://www.facebook.com/ApraChiIeAraucania

This account shared content that links the rector to extreme ideologies, suggesting that individuals with such views should not hold positions in education. The idea of judicial persecution as a solution to the conflict is also being promoted.

Another involved account is the official page of the National Libertarian Party (Instagram) https://www.instagram.com/partido_nacional_libertario

Posts from this account echo the claim that the rector acts based on political logic, reinforcing the narrative that the university is “ideologically captured.”

The YouTube channel CLV Eningma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9v9H5de5Lc disseminates opinions directly blaming the rector for the events, including explicit calls for his resignation and questioning his ability to lead an educational institution. “This happens because there is a leftist rector who deliberately allows such actions,” one post states.

Additionally, the account “eltrumpista” has propagated one of the most extreme claims, alleging that the minister was “kidnapped” by university authorities and student leaders, an accusation lacking support from official information.

Furthermore, on Twitter, the account “ANTI WOKE” run by Mike Palmice Jr., which features openly ideological descriptions (“ANTI-IMMIGRATION,” “MAGA”), spread widely hateful messages, stating that “Rector Montecinos must resign, and we won’t stop until he does. Communist criminal.”

The Twitter account @profemuychilena, also spreading hate from the far right, even asserted that “Chile demands the removal of Egon Montecinos,” attempting to generalize the sentiments of a narrowly defined group of people and social media accounts.

At the conclusion of this report, a new post from the fan page “Noticias Chile,” linked to the Libertarian Party, joined the disinformation campaign by publishing: “Rector Montecinos dismisses expelling students involved: ‘I know them; they are passionate about fighting social injustices,’ statements that the rector has never made.

This coordinated action managed to flood the social media ecosystem with repeated comments and phrases. Among the most recurring messages are:

“The rector must resign now” “This occurs because a leftist rector allows it”

“Communist criminal” “Good for nothing”

The content not only aims to attack the rector’s management but also seeks to delegitimize him from an ideological perspective, creating a climate of hostility that transcends the specific incident and ignores a considerable issue not only concerning the Universidad Austral de Chile but the Chilean educational system: violence.

Political Pressure: From Discourse to Institutions

The digital offensive resonated with figures from the Republican Party and other political actors. The party’s president, Arturo Squella, publicly questioned the rector, even suggesting that the Public Ministry should investigate him, arguing he had prior knowledge of the protest.

Similarly, Senator Cristian Vial announced oversight actions, stating that “classrooms are for education, not for violence,” delivering a discourse that reinforces institutional pressure on the rectorate.

However, from the academic community and critical sectors to these statements, there has been warning against the risk of instrumentalizing a specific incident to push political agendas, even alerting to potential attempts at “ideological persecution” within autonomous university spaces.

Unseen Aspects

In stark contrast to the accusations, internal documents, photographic records, and official communications reveal a different scenario.

Rector Egon Montecinos, along with university staff, remained alongside the minister at all times and attempted to engage in dialogue with students.

“It was the university itself that arranged for its private guards to ensure the minister could ultimately leave,” said a student from the university who witnessed the events to El Ciudadano.

Moreover, it has been disclosed that even after the minister left the place, having been abandoned by the other authorities of her collective, she went to file a complaint with the PDI, where Rector Egon Montecinos arrived to check on her condition, offer his apologies for what occurred, and extend his help.

Both the Board of Directors and the Academic Council of UACh sent letters to Minister Lincolao expressing their apologies for what had happened and committing to measures to prevent similar incidents.

The minister herself responded by valuing the institutional attitude and, particularly, Rector Montecinos’ efforts to de-escalate the situation:

“I thank the rector for his efforts to de-escalate the situation during a complex moment for everyone.”

She also acknowledged that the events do not represent the entirety of the university community and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the institution.

Security Without Militarization

One of the challenged points has been the university’s decision to protect the minister with private guards instead of armed police forces. The rectorate has defended this decision based on a clear principle that the university is a civil space.

“The university is not a regiment; it is not a barracks,” the rector stated in an interview with Radio Duna.

While concrete, verifiable, and supported facts point to a contained situation that was institutionally addressed within its mandates, the reaction on social media and certain political sectors has escalated into a campaign that not only questions the management but aims to install a broader ideological narrative attacking one of the most beloved universities in Southern Chile for purely political and deceitful ends.
