Violent vehicle thefts have seen a 24% decrease nationwide compared to last year, a result of strategic operations that have been refined to tackle this crime. In the Metropolitan Region (RM), the drop reaches 23%, thanks to the collaborative efforts of police intelligence and the Vehicle Recovery and Search Service (SEBV).

Authorities highlighted that this strategy has successfully dismantled organized crime and targeted the secondary market for stolen vehicles, reflected in the tangible results of the so-called Antiencerronas Plan 4.0.

The head of Drug Control and Criminal Investigations in Carabineros, General Jaime Velasco, emphasized the initiative’s scope, which integrates metrics and crime intelligence analysis.

Achievements of Antiencerronas Plan 4.0

Thanks to the implementation of the plan, a total of 29 criminal gangs have been dismantled; 194 individuals involved in this type of crime have been arrested, and 94 vehicles with active theft charges have been recovered.

The Antiencerronas Plan 4.0 also emphasized disrupting the supply chain by targeting the market for stolen car parts.

Indeed, the increase and focus of inspections carried out at workshops and dismantling sites led to significant discoveries. Inspection figures indicate 178 control operations, 2,381 identity checks, and 4,096 vehicle inspections.

Prioritizing the Fight Against Violent Vehicle Theft

Undersecretary of the Interior, Carolina Leitao, reaffirmed the importance of continuing these efforts and stated that the fight against violent vehicle theft remains a priority for the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, as it directly affects individuals and involves frequent use of weapons.

“As long as this crime continues, we will keep developing strategies,” she explained.

Leitao attributed the plan’s success to an evolving strategy that incorporates technology.

In this regard, she referred to the Interconnected Surveillance System with Artificial Intelligence (SITIA) and its collaboration with Carabineros to enhance its utility in investigative functions and crime pursuit.

“Public-private collaboration is also key, as results improve when cameras or arches are incorporated,” she noted, as reported by Bio Bío Chile.

Additionally, Carabineros has increased preventive patrols in critical georeferenced areas.

“With this new operational strategy, Carabineros has integrated metrics and criminal intelligence analysis (…) As long as a crime exists, there will always be concern, considering there are victims and vehicles are highly valued by citizens,” commented General Jaime Velasco, head of Drug Control and Criminal Investigations in Carabineros.

The combination of police intelligence, inspections against the illegal auto parts trade, technological deployment, and focused patrolling has solidified as the method that is reversing the trends of one of the crimes that creates the greatest sense of insecurity among the public.
