A false claim regarding former presidential candidate Jeannette Jara went viral on social media, with its origins tracing back to a right-wing account.
The controversy erupted following the announcement that the former Minister of Labor and Social Welfare would be joining the Department of Management and Public Policies at the University of Santiago, Chile (Usach).
This news was confirmed by the Student Center of Public Administration in a statement shared on Instagram celebrating Jara’s return to the institution where she completed her university studies and previously presided over the Student Federation of USACH (Feusach).
The ex-secretary of state graduated from the university in 1997 with a degree in Public Administration and later returned to pursue a master’s degree in management and public policies.
Subsequently, she taught at the same institution in her field.
“We are thrilled to share this great news: the former Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, Jeannette Jara, returns to her alma mater to join the Department of Management and Public Policies as a professor,” they stated.
They stated that this is “a reunion that undoubtedly strengthens our academic community and inspires us to keep building from the public sector.”
However, following the announcement, a series of speculations began circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) regarding the amount Jara would receive monthly for her teaching role at the university.
Multiple accounts began to publish, without providing any evidence, that the former minister would earn 13 million pesos monthly.
After conducting an analysis, @BotCheckerCL managed to trace the viral falsehood’s origin to a right-wing linked account.
“@Soubirous_33 created and spread it,” they reported, expressing concern that around 6:00 AM on Wednesday, 130,000 people had already seen it on X, and nearly 3,000 users had replicated this false information.
The @BotCheckerCL team indicated that they had submitted evidence to the relevant authorities for “judicial purposes.”
They also pointed out that @Soubirous_33 has among its 6,300 followers right-wing and far-right deputies such as Francisco Javier Orrego (National Renewal) and Paz Charpentier (Republican Party), in addition to the economist and president of the Liberty and Development Advisory Council, Luis Larraín Arroyo.
In light of the misinformation campaign, the media outlet Fast Check reached out directly to Usach, which strongly denied that Jeannette Jara would receive a salary of 13 million pesos, as claimed by the right-wing accounts.
They clarified that regarding compensation, it is “one single course, with a monthly salary of approximately $280,000,” a figure far below that circulated on X, determined in accordance with the university’s current single salary scale.
The educational institution explained that Jara’s hiring “follows the regular procedure: submission of academic and curriculum credentials, institutional review, and approval at the corresponding collegial instances, including the faculty council, which is currently in process.”
Simultaneously, the Fast Check team contacted the former presidential candidate herself, who denied the figure circulating on social media and confirmed the information provided by Usach.
Jara specified that her teaching role will focus on the Introduction to Law course.
