On Saturday, August 29th, Santiago will host the 15th edition of the World Folklore Day Festival, a vibrant gathering that will bring together thousands of artists and representatives from various regional groups across Chile and foreign cultural communities present in the country.

The free and family-friendly event kicks off at 10:00 AM with a massive parade featuring over 2,000 participants, who will fill the Alameda in Santiago with music, dance, and color.

Following the parade, a diverse artistic program will take place at San Borja Park, located at the Universidad Católica Metro station. Throughout the day, folkloric groups from countries such as Chile, Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, the Basque Country, and Ukraine will perform.

Highlighted acts include the National Folkloric Ballet (Bafona) and the Antumapu Folkloric Ballet, along with performances of cuecas by Daniel Muñoz and Los Marujos, and the group Los Santiaguinos.

«We want this festival to be a grand celebration of our culture, but also an opportunity to come together and recognize our diversity. Folklore is alive and takes on meaning when shared and transmitted,» states Óscar Ramírez, artistic director of Antumapu and event organizer.

In 1960, UNESCO declared August 22nd as World Folklore Day to highlight the importance of these cultural expressions. Since 2011, the Antumapu Folkloric Ballet from the University of Chile has been organizing a celebration in Santiago that brings together groups from various localities across the country.

Now, 15 years since that first celebration, this festival continues to unite thousands of artists parading down the Alameda, sharing music, art, and dance.
