The gray-haired among us may possibly recall a fantastic scene from the movie2001: A Space Odysseyin which supercomputer HAL resists being disconnected by its operators. The voice of the artificial contraption was expressive as it pleadingly cried, demanding that it remain active. But by ceasing to obey orders and showing a certain derisive autonomy, it had terrified those it was meant to serve, and they came to see its disconnection as a necessary step.Here was artificial intelligence, rebelling against its owners. Could something similar take place in our brave new future, beyond cinematographic fictions?
