From Bannon to Musk: The decade that made misinformation the new normal

“The real opposition is the media,” declared Steve Bannon in 2018, while serving as White House chief strategist during Donald Trump’s first term. “And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.” Bannon showed the way, and now Trump is returning to the presidency riding that same wave, this time fueled by his new chief strategist, Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X. “Now you are the press,” Musk told his loyal Twitter followers. Like Bannon, Musk holds the media in disdain and is content to muddy the waters: more than half of his posts during the campaign were deemed “misleading,” according to CBS. Both understand that in today’s world, the only thing that matters is the narrative, the culture war.
