On August 20, the latest film by acclaimed American director Gus Van Sant, titled The Negotiation (Dead Man’s Wire), will make its debut. Van Sant is a pivotal figure in contemporary independent cinema and a vital voice in queer filmmaking in the United States.

For this reason, he has been selected as the Director of the Month for August at Centro Arte Alameda.

This special series will explore some of the most significant works from his filmography, including My Own Private Idaho (1991), Last Days (2005), Good Will Hunting (1997), Drugstore Cowboy (1989), Elephant (2003), and Paranoid Park (2007).

The initiative is funded by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage through its Program for Support of Collaborative Cultural Organizations.

Gus Van Sant’s career has been crucial for understanding the evolution of independent cinema in the U.S. In the 1990s, he was a key representative of the New Queer Cinema movement, alongside directors such as Greg Araki, Bruce LaBruce, and Todd Haynes.

This group of filmmakers transformed the portrayal of LGBTIQ+ identities and experiences, moving away from traditional narrative conventions to create more complex, provocative, and deeply human stories.

His films featured characters full of contradictions and nuances, expanding the possibilities of queer cinema and challenging the dominant representations of the time.

Over the years, Van Sant broadened his lens to include a wide range of topics, seamlessly transitioning between independent films and major Hollywood productions. His work has tackled adolescence, friendship, addiction, violence, politics, love, and marginalization.

Film Schedule

The series will kick off on Tuesday, August 4 at 18:45 with My Own Private Idaho (1991). Starring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, it follows two young sex workers navigating the streets of Portland while confronting vulnerability, friendship, and the search for identity. River Phoenix’s performance earned him the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival.

On Tuesday, August 11 at 18:45, it will be Last Days (2005), freely inspired by the last days of Kurt Cobain. With a contemplative and minimalist style, Van Sant depicts the loneliness and isolation of a musician overwhelmed by success and his own ghosts.

On Saturday, August 15 at 16:45, the classic Good Will Hunting (1997) will be screened, featuring Matt Damon and Robin Williams. It tells the story of a young man with extraordinary mathematical talent whose life changes after meeting a mentor willing to help him. The script, written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and solidified the careers of both actors.

On Tuesday, August 18 at 18:45, it will be Drugstore Cowboy (1989), considered one of the foundational works of Van Sant’s filmography. Based on James Fogle’s autobiographical novel, the film follows a group of young addicts surviving by stealing drugs while traveling through the Northwestern United States. With Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch, and Heather Graham in the cast, the film combines humor, lyricism, and a powerful exploration of addiction and marginalization.

After the premiere of The Negotiation (Dead Man’s Wire), the series will continue on Tuesday, August 25 at 18:45 with Elephant (2003), winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Inspired by the Columbine High School massacre, the film observes with unsettling serenity the routine of a group of students before a school shooting.

The series will conclude on Friday, August 28 at 19:00 with Paranoid Park (2007), the story of a young skater who, after accidentally getting involved in a security guard’s death, must live with the weight of secrecy and guilt.
