On Saturday, July 4th, the Atacama Desert Foundation and Colombian filmmaker and photographer Jorge Panchoaga will premiere the first episode of the series Amt’añ thaki – Pathways of Memory.
Funded by the Regional Government of Antofagasta, specifically through FNDR 2025, this audiovisual project is divided into four installments that focus on the ecological zones of the Atacama Desert: Puna, Oasis, Pampa, and Coast.
Each episode has a runtime of approximately 10 minutes, and after each release, episodes will be freely accessible to regional, national, and international audiences on YouTube and the Foundation’s official website: www.fundaciondesiertoatacama.cl.
As explained by the Foundation, this project aims to be «a journey through ancient pathways and settings that make up the four cultural layers of the Antofagasta Region. Partnering with the Foundation’s archaeologists, we seek to translate archaeological language and enhance it with local voices.»
Colombian filmmaker Jorge Panchoaga adds that the work «stems from the inquiry into our relationship with water, and in that sense, it is about how we have constructed our relationship with the places we inhabit, understanding time cyclically in each of these locations.»
With stunning visuals traversing the land from mountains to the sea, and from wide aerial shots to close-ups of stones, vegetation, sand, and ocean, the series Amt’añ thaki – Pathways of Memory uses ancestral routes as a narrative thread that connects the voices of the Foundation’s researchers with those of the heirs of these ways of life. Although located in four distant points of the Atacama Desert, they are linked through these paths.
Audiences will explore rarely-seen landscapes that bear traces of a past whose remnants may be imperceptible to those who inhabit the territory out of habit or to those who are unaware of them.
«The Atacama Desert is not an empty stage; it is a territory that speaks. Through its pathways, rock art, and ceremonies, this documentary series travels through the puna, oases, pampa, and coast to reveal a worldview where walking is remembering and the territory is a living entity. Local voices and specialists invite us to understand the desert,» the production team adds.
With a focus on journeys across the desert and transitions, the series addresses ancient ways of life that resonate in the present. From this perspective, the protagonists of the four episodes share how they honor and express respect for the land and nature. Caring for the environment is presented as a form of reflection.
For the Atacama Desert Foundation, one of the main goals of this project is educational. As they state, «It is absolutely relevant and urgent to promote knowledge of the richness of the ancestral ways of inhabiting the territory, especially among new generations, thereby planting the seeds for their care and preservation.»
«We are very pleased that Jorge Panchoaga and his team have succeeded in capturing this spirit and beautifully conveying our love for this land and these ways of life,» they added.
Finally, the Foundation announced that the educational mission of the series will soon be enhanced with the launch and permanent activation of an interactive platform dedicated to the geoglyphs of the Antofagasta Region, with a date to be confirmed.
