Original article: Jackson boxea a Desbordes en Twitter y lo lleva contra las cuerdas
The clash between Giorgio Jackson and Mario Desbordes has emerged as one of the most discussed political events on social media in recent days, following a direct confrontation on platform X that escalated swiftly from public statements to accusations of lying and the sharing of WhatsApp conversations.
The controversy ignited when Desbordes claimed he had intervened prior to the 2022 presidential handover to prevent the dismissal of a Subdere official facing a severe illness. Through his posts, he maintained that he had prior conversations with incoming authorities and questioned Jackson’s silence, implying he had advance knowledge of the situation. His comments suggested potential political responsibility for the then-minister regarding a sensitive administrative decision.
Jackson’s response came quickly and marked a turning point in the disagreement. The former minister vehemently denied Desbordes’ version of events and accused him outright of dishonesty, warning publicly that he could present evidence to counter his claims. In a message that went viral, he challenged Desbordes, asking whether he needed to show a «screenshot» to put an end to the lies.
Hours later, Jackson followed through on his warning by posting a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation dated March 18, 2022, after the transition of power. In the message, Desbordes sought assistance regarding the situation, describing it as a humanitarian case.
Along with the evidence, Jackson bolstered his criticism by stating that Desbordes’ «lies and media operations» forced him to make the conversation public.
Desbordes, nearly in «knockout» mode and against the ropes, replied by sticking to his version of events while accusing Jackson of withholding background information. The mayor insisted that there were contacts prior to the leaked chat, asserting that the former minister was not telling the whole truth, thus prolonging a dispute that has quickly moved to the forefront of political and media debate.
This exchange has highlighted not only a difference of opinions regarding a specific case but also the increasing centrality of social media as a battleground for political confrontation in Chile. In this context, the publication of evidence, direct accusations, and real-time narrative construction have become key tools in the struggle for public credibility. For now, the back-and-forth between Jackson and Desbordes remains open, with both sides entrenched in opposing positions and a conflict that shows no signs of resolution as it continues to escalate in the digital arena.
The controversy erupted following a report revealing the departure of a Subdere employee while undergoing cancer treatment. From this premise, Desbordes publicly claimed he intervened before the change of government to prevent her dismissal.
In his offensive on X (Twitter), the current mayor of Santiago launched a frontal accusation:
«We spoke several times before the handover… On the morning of March 11, she was let go… Jackson is silent and Crispi is lying.»
This message established the thesis that the new authorities were aware of the case in advance and did not act.
Rather than staying on the sidelines, Jackson entered the ring with a warning that would set the tone for the confrontation:
«Is it necessary for me to show the screenshot for you to stop lying?»
With this phrase, the former minister not only denied Desbordes’ version but also anticipated a further move: to present evidence.
Hours later, Jackson fulfilled his threat and released a WhatsApp screenshot dated March 18, 2022, after the transition of power. In it, Desbordes requested help regarding the case, describing it as a «humanitarian case» due to a cancer relapse.
The message was interpreted as evidence that the contact occurred after the reported events, weakening the mayor’s narrative.
But Jackson did not stop with the proof. He escalated further by stating:
«Mario, your lies and media operations… leave me no choice.»
Refusing to back down, Desbordes responded by sticking to his version and raising the stakes:
«I have no doubt that you remember the prior conversations… that you lying… is progress.»
