Original article: Contra el genocidio en Gaza: flotilla Global Sumud suma 25 barcos en Italia y escala su misión
The Global Sumud Flotilla has added 25 boats in Italy to amplify its mission against the genocide in Gaza and deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.
«With 25 additional boats joining in Italy, the flotilla now exceeds the size of last year’s entire mission, signaling increased international participation and intensified civil pressure to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza,» the organization stated in a press release.
The Global Sumud Flotilla departed on April 12, 2026, from Moll de la Fusta port in Barcelona, en route to the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, with a journey across the Mediterranean that includes stops in Italy, Greece, and Turkey.
In fact, the boats were incorporated at the end of last week just as this international initiative passed through the Italian city of Siracusa.
«The Global Sumud Flotilla has «doubled» its size by incorporating 25 additional boats as it passed through Siracusa (Italy) and has added vessels from various Italian cities to continue its journey to Gaza,» they stated in the text.
«The convergence in Siracusa is both a logistical milestone and a political statement: the flotilla is not static; it’s growing, adapting, and advancing,» they emphasized.
They highlighted that as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, the Flotilla has gained strength across borders and noted that the addition of new boats from Italy transforms the mission into an even more formidable «civil presence at sea,» as it reflects the growing international refusal to normalize the blockade, hunger, and collective punishment imposed by Israel.
«Every new port strengthens the flotilla not just numerically but also politically, broadening its reach, deepening its alliances, and amplifying the global call for accountability,» they emphasized.
Furthermore, they noted that following their time in Italy and the expansion of their vessel count, the flotilla sends a clear message: «this mission is advancing, and we will not be deterred«.
The initiative, which aims to reach Gaza amid genocide, gathers dozens of vessels and activists from various countries. This includes a Chilean delegation that is participating not only by sea but also on land.
In total, seven Chileans are traveling aboard the flotilla, and one more is part of a land convoy attempting to reach the Palestinian enclave by traversing the desert through Egypt to the Rafah crossing.
These individuals are Claudio Caiozzi, Macarena Chahuán, Carolina Eltit, Víctor Chanfreau, Franco Torti, Ignacio Ladrón de Guevara, and Bruno Salas Zarzar, who are aboard boats that left Barcelona, along with Felipe Uthman, who is participating via land.
«We set sail for the second time, this time from Augusta port in Sicily, Italy, getting closer to Gaza, Palestine, to break the blockade and create a humanitarian corridor,» Salas stated in a video shared on his Instagram account.
He reaffirmed that the Chilean delegation remains committed to this mission, as «there is no room for inaction.»
«The Palestinian people have taught humanity a lesson, we cannot fail them. Long live free Palestine,» proclaimed the visual artist, cultural manager, and filmmaker.
