Original article: Mary Valencia, del Cauca (Colombia), hoy figura de Chile: La Roja vuelve a soñar con un Mundial tras hazaña en Uruguay
On Saturday night at the Estadio Centenario, the air was thick with the scent of defeat. Just 4 minutes into the match, Uruguay was already up 1-0. However, like life, football often brings unexpected heroines. That heroine was Mary Valencia. As noted by RedGol, «Mary Valencia, the Colo Colo forward who wasn’t a starter this game, skillfully navigated into the box and finished perfectly before the opposing goalkeeper to score the equalizer at 1-1.»
Not a starter, but she became the star of the match: The stakes were high. Following losses to Argentina and Colombia, the Chilean women’s team was fighting for their future in Montevideo. Just when it seemed the situation would crumble, Valencia emerged as the standout player. According to Mario López M. in ESTAPASANDO.CL, «Mary Valencia was undoubtedly the great figure of the evening, involved in all three goals: she scored the 1-1, assisted in the 2-1, and contributed to the 3-1 triumph.» Her instinct, determination, and talent didn’t just turn the game around (final score 3-1), they revived hope for an entire nation.
RedGol highlights the context: «Despite her strong performance at Colo Colo, Mary Valencia was not starting for Luis Mena. She saw limited playtime against Argentina and only 3 minutes against Colombia. But against Uruguay, starting from the outset, she proved that her presence is irreplaceable. Her physical prowess and skill in front of the goal mirrored a player who has arrived to make an impact.»

Mary Valencia was born in López de Micay (Cauca, Colombia) on February 8, 2003. She spent her childhood in Zaragoza, Antioquia (Colombia). At the age of 11, Mary and her mother moved to Chile, settling in Viña del Mar.
From a young age, with her mother’s unwavering support, she learned that hard work is non-negotiable. Her biography recounts, «She quickly stood out in school football, with her mother’s active support, and in 2018, she joined Santiago Wanderers.» Each pass and goal has built towards a dream that started from scratch.
An interview from 2021 by AS Chile highlighted: «I am an only child and my mom supports me in everything related to football. However, she always reminds me that I cannot stop studying, even when opportunities arise.»
In 2022, she obtained Chilean nationality after completing five years of residency, a process that required three attempts. That same year, she made her debut for the national team. Now, at Colo Colo, she has become a key player. Her journey, built on determination and hard work, is a living testament that talent knows no borders. Her dedication has been crucial for Chile to once again dream of the Women’s World Cup, a hope that seemed dim but was reignited at the Centenario.
«My mom and I have been processing the nationality for many years, but we haven’t been notified yet. It’s a very tedious process,» she shared with AS in 2021, already a standout at Santiago Wanderers at age 18.
In a 2022 interview with Radio Diario Universidad de Chile, Mary, then a player for Santiago Morning, revealed the core of her character. When asked about being an inspiration for other migrants, she responded with a phrase that resonates more powerfully than ever: «As a migrant, I carry the weight of doing things right, of seizing the opportunities given to fulfill dreams, and caring for myself and my family.” This responsibility empowers her rather than overwhelms.
In that same conversation, the forward addressed the xenophobic criticism she has sometimes faced. She stated, «People will always have positive and negative things to say. That should never be a reason to lower one’s standards, both as a person and as a player.»
