Original article: Nuevo subsecretario de Prevención del Delito tuvo que renunciar en 2021 por mentirle a su jefe, el exministro del Interior Rodrigo Delgado
Following the recent departures of the Undersecretaries for Crime Prevention (Ana Quintana) and Public Security (Andrés Jouannet), President José A. Kast announced the appointments of their successors.
María del Pilar Giannini Bravo has been appointed as the new Undersecretary of Public Security, while Gonzalo Guerrero Valle returns to La Moneda as the Undersecretary for Crime Prevention. Guerrero’s return is notable due to a scandal in July 2021, when he served as Chief of Staff for former Interior Minister Rodrigo Delgado.
National reports indicate that at the time, as the country was still battling the COVID-19 pandemic, Guerrero was forced to resign for withholding crucial information from his superior, Minister Delgado.
It was reported then that Guerrero delayed notifying the minister about a familial connection to a 7-month-old infant infected with the Delta variant of the coronavirus, whose family entered Chile from the United States, violating existing health measures.
«He made an error by not communicating to me when it was known that these individuals had violated health regulations,» Minister Delgado stated at the time to Radio Biobío, emphasizing that this was a «more than sufficient reason to accept his resignation.»
It was later revealed that Guerrero was the brother-in-law of the baby’s father, who had traveled to the US as an evangelical pastor to attend a gathering of the conservative foundation «Coalition for Faith and Freedom.»
This past incident resurfaced just minutes after Guerrero’s appointment to the Ministry of Security. One of the first to respond was Socialist Congressman Daniel Manouchehri, who criticized, «Kast promised order and security. What we see is something else. They humiliate Jouannet and replace him with Gonzalo Guerrero, who had to leave the Interior Ministry in 2021 for failing to disclose his familial ties to those who brought the Delta variant to the country during the pandemic.»
