“No to Salmon Farming”: Río Bueno Council, Local Leaders, and Communities Kill AquaChile’s Project and Restore Historic Agreement to Protect the River
During the 77th regular session of the Municipal Council of Río Bueno, held on April 15, 2026, AquaChile presented its «Río Bueno Salmon Farming» initiative, which faced strong opposition from a broad coalition of community members, indigenous groups, councilors, and the mayor, as reported by Noticias Los Ríos.
Pedro Ramírez, managing director of freshwater resources at AquaChile, detailed the project’s status, mentioning, according to Noticias Los Ríos: “This is a salmon farming project we are evaluating here in the Los Ríos Region, in the municipality of Río Bueno. It is still under development.” He added that the project would utilize existing water rights (three thousand liters per second) and land-based tanks.
Lonco Luis Huaiquimilla expressed cultural and environmental concerns, according to Noticias Los Ríos: “How can you guarantee us, when the issues surrounding Chilean salmon farming are well-documented, that you won’t pollute our waters?” He emphasized that the river holds “a spiritual significance much deeper than simply the water.” Councilor Valeska Prieto also raised concerns about the community’s actual involvement in the decision-making process.
Mayor Luis Reyes Álvarez recalled a historic 2013 agreement by the council that opposed interventions on the river. He stated, as cited by the outlet: “I align myself with our long-standing position… today we will mobilize all necessary resources… to prevent any interventions concerning our Río Bueno.” The session concluded with a unanimous rejection of the salmon farming project.
