San Antonio Port Workers Reject DP World’s Claims Linking Operational Issues to 40-Hour Law

Original article: Puerto de San Antonio: Trabajadores desmienten versión de empresa DP World que culpa a ley de las 40 horas por problemas operacionales en su terminal

In a public statement, the dock workers of San Antonio responded to recent comments made by DP World Chile regarding the causes of certain «operational issues» occurring in the terminal’s shift system, which the company attributes to «the implementation of the 40-hour law.»

The labor organizations that signed the statement – the Professional Dock Workers Union (Semproport), the Container Workers Union (Sintraconop), and the DP World SAI Workers Union No. 1 – claim that the company’s statement is «false and omits relevant facts that are currently severely impacting the terminal’s operations.»

«We categorically reject the company’s intent to deliberately mix two distinct issues to confuse public opinion,» the workers stated.

They further explained that «on one hand, there is the implementation of the reduced workday established by the 40-Hour Law, and on the other, the company’s unilateral decision to modify shift distribution systems, which has caused the real operational problems currently affecting the terminal.»

According to the unions, «attempting to link these two topics is a maneuver to divert attention from the responsibilities that fall solely on the management.»

Regarding this matter, the organizations reiterated that «the unions have been, and continue to be, available to reach responsible agreements. However, we will not accept that it is publicly suggested that workers are the ones hindering dialogue, when it has been the company itself that has pushed for unilateral changes to work schedules, disrupting the normal operation of the terminal and directly affecting shipping lines, transporters, and other stakeholders in the logistics chain.»

They also emphasized that the decisions made by the company «not only undermine operational efficiency but also deeply impact the family lives, rest, and mental health of those of us who sustain the port’s operations on the ground,» and they rejected attempts by certain management to impose «anti-union practices, threats, or disciplinary pressures against workers.»
