The first Public Accountability report from José Kast received not just a response in Congress, but on the streets as well. On Monday afternoon, hundreds gathered in the Plaza de la Dignidad in Santiago to participate in the call for «The People Demand Accountability», a protest against government cuts and the so-called economic-tax megareform pushed by the Executive.

The protest against Kast’s cuts was organized by social, student, feminist, and human rights organizations, including the Coordinadora Feminista 8M, Modatima, the Asamblea Coordinadora de Estudiantes Secundarios (ACES), the Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech), Memorarte, the Comisión Contra la Tortura, and the Movimiento Socialista de los Trabajadores (MST).

The demonstration gained momentum around 6:30 PM as participants gathered near Metro Baquedano. According to reports shared by organizers and independent media, the crowd grew throughout the afternoon, showcasing banners and slogans directed against the government, the cuts, and Kast’s economic agenda.

Protest Against Kast’s Cuts Advanced Through Alameda

As time passed, part of the protest began to move westward along the Alameda, aiming toward the center of Santiago and specifically towards La Moneda, signaling a clear political response from the streets to the presidential discourse and economic measures taken by the executive.

The mobilization took place amidst growing tension. As participants advanced on the Alameda, a significant deployment of Public Order Control police appeared, with water cannons and gas-launching vehicles stationed at various points along the capital’s main axis.

As the number of demonstrators grew, the Metropolitan Mobility Network reported reroutes of public transportation services. The changes affected traffic between Manuel Rodríguez and Seminario heading east, and between Eleodoro Yáñez and Metro Los Héroes heading west.

In summary, the protest was not merely a gathering at Plaza Baquedano. The march occupied a segment of Santiago’s main avenue, necessitating alterations to public transport routes and reestablishing the Alameda as a key arena for political contestation.

Police Dispersed the Protest at Alameda and Santa Rosa

The most tense moment occurred as protesters advanced along the north lane of the Alameda towards the center. At the intersection of Alameda and Santa Rosa, police blocked the path and warned attendees over loudspeakers not to continue towards La Moneda.

Shortly thereafter, the dispersal began. The police used water cannons to dissolve the gathering amidst a heavy police presence. Footage from the scene shows methods of dispersion against individuals remaining on the Alameda.

As of the closing of this edition, no official figures were available regarding the number of participants in the mobilization. There was also no public report consolidating the number of arrests or injuries during the operation.

By 8:00 PM, authorities reported the complete reopening of the Alameda-Providencia axis and the beginning of the normalization of public transport routes.

The Streets Responded to the Public Accountability Report

The protest occurred just hours after Kast’s first Public Accountability report, which was characterized by economic announcements, structural reforms, and further signals of fiscal adjustment. For the organizing groups, the slogan «The People Demand Accountability» aimed to establish a social response to the government’s direction.

The protest against Kast’s cuts highlighted that the discussion around the megareform will not only be confined to Congress. It will also find expression on the streets, especially among organizations that argue that the executive’s adjustments affect social rights, public programs, and the living conditions of marginalized sectors.

The day ended with the Alameda cleared by the police, but with a political message firmly established: after the Public Accountability report, a significant social response to the government emerged from Plaza Baquedano and advanced toward the heart of Santiago.
