Israel has been included for the first time in the UN Secretary-General’s annual report on sexual violence in conflict (SVRC), following allegations of abuses against detained Palestinians.
This decision did not come as a surprise to the authorities of Benjamin Netanyahu’s regime. According to the Israeli newspaper ‘Haaretz’, the UN had already notified Tel Aviv in August 2025 that it could be placed on a blacklist unless corrective measures were taken, after receiving «credible information» regarding acts of sexual violence committed by security forces against Palestinian citizens held in prisons.
At that time, international inspectors also reported that they had been systematically blocked from accessing these facilities.
Reports of physical and sexual abuses against Palestinian prisoners have accumulated over the years. The Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem has documented numerous cases of sexual assaults in the country’s prisons.
One of the most severe incidents came to light in 2024 when a video recorded at the Sde Teiman detention center in the Negev desert was leaked. The footage showed several officers abusing a Palestinian prisoner, who was later hospitalized with serious injuries and a rectal injury.
Additionally, an investigation published earlier in May by The New York Times included testimonies from fourteen Palestinian men and women who claimed to have been sexually assaulted, either by Israeli settlers or members of security forces, as reported by France 24.
Media pressure led Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir to dismiss the then-military prosecutor Yifat Tomer Yerushalmi on May 26, who was accused of having leaked the Sde Teiman video to the press.
The new military prosecutor subsequently dropped the case against the five reservists accused of perpetrating the rape, while the Ministry of Defense sought a lengthy prison sentence for Yerushalmi.
Following its inclusion on the list, the Israeli government immediately announced the severance of all ties with Guterres’s office «until a new Secretary-General is appointed.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, went even further: “We have finished with this Secretary-General,” he stated in a video posted on X, adding that the decision to “accuse us of using sexual violence as a weapon of war is outrageous.”
He indicated that while Guterres remains at the helm of the UN, there will be no communication with the Secretary-General’s office.
According to the Zionist regime, this measure aims to “create a false symmetry between Israel and the actual sexual atrocities committed by Hamas.” “Putting Israel and Hamas terrorists on the same list is unacceptable,” Danon concluded.
It is noteworthy that just days ago, the Global Sumud Flotilla accused Israeli forces of sexual abuse against humanitarian mission activists who were kidnapped in international waters and subsequently detained.
Similarly, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) has documented a long list of cases of sexual violence against both women and men detained by Israeli forces in Gaza since the outbreak of war against the Palestinian enclave in October 2023.
Israel has repeatedly criticized the UN’s top official and other senior figures for their criticism of the bombings and the invasion carried out against the Gaza Strip.
According to Gaza health authorities, the Israeli aggression has resulted in over 72,000 deaths, including more than 900 during the ceasefire mediated by the United States.
