A new trial has begun in California against Meta, the company founded by Mark Zuckerberg, concerning the addiction that its social media platforms, Instagram and Facebook, have caused among children and adolescents.

This lawsuit, filed by 29 states, dates back to 2023. Various international media outlets have reported that the legal action claims Meta «designed and implemented harmful features on its platforms that create addiction in minors, causing them serious physical and mental harm, while misleading the public about the existence and severity of these risks.».

A report from EFE noted that the lawsuit, led by California, Arizona, and Colorado, asserts that Meta «violated federal and state laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), which gives parents control over the personal information that websites and apps can collect from children under 13 years old.».

The trial has generated significant attention across the nation. On the eve of the trial, California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued a statement declaring that «one of my most important duties is to protect our children from harm.».

«As our lawsuit alleges, Meta prioritizes profits over the safety of children and constantly violates consumer protection laws,» stated the prosecutor.

Moreover, EFE recalled that just days ago, a district court in Santa Fe, New Mexico, ordered Meta to pay $567 million to a mental health reparations fund for youth, ruling that its operating methods «undermine the health and safety of adolescents,» a decision that many consider a significant precedent for the new trial.
