Venezuelan Algae Exports to Chile Resume as Consular Relations Reopen

Interim President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, highlighted that the resumption of consular relations with Chile will unlock new exports, streamlining operational processes and supporting the marketing of non-oil products in the southern market.

As a prime example of this renewed momentum, she celebrated the shipment of algae from Caracas to Santiago.

«I am very pleased that the algae heading to Chile today have the benefit of our newly established consular relations.
We are resuming diplomatic consular relations aimed at fostering cooperation, friendship, and brotherhood… With the resumption of consular relations with Chile, our entrepreneurs will find it easier to navigate export procedures,» she stated.

She emphasized that this represents a crucial first step toward restoring diplomatic ties severed since July 2024, reaffirming her call for integration based on cooperation and mutual respect.

The leader explained that the reestablishment of these channels aims to facilitate the trade exchange of local products and support the operational capacity of Venezuelan businesses abroad.

Last Thursday, the governments of Chile and Venezuela announced the reactivation of consular relations as part of a gradual process leading to the full resumption of bilateral ties.

The measure, communicated through a joint statement, pertains exclusively to the consulates, which are responsible for attending to citizens of one nation abroad, providing administrative services and direct assistance.

Chile, under the leadership of President José Antonio Kast and Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna, decided to recognize Delcy Rodríguez as the interim president of Venezuela, marking a shift in Chile’s diplomatic stance following earlier rejection of the Venezuelan electoral process, as it seeks to reconnect diplomatic ties with Caracas.

According to the official statement, the decision by Santiago and Caracas aims to «ensure the protection and consular services for their nationals residing in both brother countries.»

In the text, both governments announced the «initiation of a roadmap» aimed at the gradual normalization of bilateral relations, stating that this process will be based on constructive dialogue, adhering to the principles of mutual respect, reciprocity, and strict compliance with international law.

However, the process of normalizing relations between the two nations is a journey that follows clearly defined stages, ranging from internal exploration to consolidation of stable ties, which include phases of preparation, dialogue, initial agreements, reestablishment of consular services, and strengthening bilateral relations. Each of these phases demands a high level of political, diplomatic, and technical coordination to overcome differences.

The Venezuelan leader urged José Antonio Kast to «march together» with an agenda of friendship and cooperation.

«You (Kast) can also count on a well-meaning Venezuelan responsible for international relations to walk together. Thus, our South American countries march together on a common agenda, an agenda of cooperation, an agenda of friendship,» she expressed during an event broadcast by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV).
